Legal Aid and Defender is one of the largest legal aid organizations in the region. On the civil side it represents eligible residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties in matters they could not otherwise afford a lawyer for.
Everything begins with intake. You call, answer questions about your household income, your household size and the legal problem you have, and the office decides whether the case fits what it can take on that year.
Being eligible on income does not guarantee representation. Legal aid offices set case priorities and their capacity changes, so the honest answer is that some eligible people are turned away. If that happens, ask for a referral rather than hanging up.
