Adult Protective Services, part of MDHHS, investigates reports that a vulnerable adult is being abused, neglected or financially exploited, and works to connect that person with protective services.
Call when something is wrong and you cannot explain it away: unexplained injuries, a person who is suddenly isolated from family, money moving in ways that do not make sense, care that has stopped. You do not need to be certain, and you do not need to be a relative.
A report triggers a screening, and if it meets the criteria, an investigation. The same statewide line also takes reports of suspected child abuse or neglect. In an emergency, call 911 first.
APS investigates reports about vulnerable adults. Not every report meets the criteria for an investigation, and APS is not a substitute for calling 911 in an emergency.
