Michigan's crime victim compensation program, run through MDHHS, can reimburse eligible victims for certain costs a crime left them with. Medical and counselling bills, lost wages and funeral expenses are the usual categories.
Compensation is not a lawsuit and it does not depend on anyone being convicted. For many families it is the only money that arrives at all, and it arrives while everything else is still unresolved.
There are eligibility rules and filing deadlines, and they are not generous. Reporting the crime to law enforcement and cooperating with the investigation are normally part of qualifying.
