DIFS is the state department that regulates insurance companies in Michigan. Among other things, it takes complaints from consumers about how an insurer has handled a claim.
File with DIFS when an insurer will not answer you, has cut off benefits without explaining why, or is behaving in a way that looks like it breaks the rules rather than simply disagreeing with you. A complaint creates a record and forces the insurer to respond in writing to a regulator.
DIFS regulates the company. It does not act as your lawyer, it does not decide the value of your claim, and filing a complaint does not stop a deadline from running on a lawsuit.
DIFS regulates insurers. It cannot represent you, award you benefits, or extend any legal deadline that applies to your claim.
